RCIA For Children

At St. Brigid, the Rite of Christian Initiation Adapted to Children and Youth is a two (2) year process.

Unbaptized children less than seven (7) years of age celebrate the Rite of Baptism for infants. Children not baptized Catholic, seven (7) years of age and over, enter the Rite of Christian Initiation (RCIA) Adapted to Children/Youth and celebrate Baptism or Profession of Catholic Faith, Confirmation, and Eucharist at the Easter Vigil after a minimum two year preparation. During the first year of this preparation, the children are placed in regular faith formation groups appropriate to their school grade. In the second year, they join other children, not baptized in the Catholic faith, in a multi-grade group of RCIA Adapted to Children or Youth.

For more information about your child beginning the RCIA process here at St. Brigid and starting and continuing their spiritual journey in the Catholic faith, please contact Juan Serros, Director of Religious Education for Children and Youth, at 210.696.0896, ext. 206.

Faith Formation For Children And Youth

We offer catechesis in the Catholic Faith for children and youth in a loving and safe environment.

Catechesis is provided by volunteer catechists who feel called to this ministry. Materials used adhere to all mandates of the Archdiocese. Certification of catechists, even those who are professional teachers, is strongly encouraged. If you love working with children or youth, please go to our Volunteer Opportunities page to see what we have to offer you on your faith journey.

Catechetical sessions run during the school calendar year. (We begin in September and end in May.) We encourage parents/guardians to build community with other parents and to take advantage of adult faith formation available during the children’s sessions.

Adult Time / Parent Time

Adult formation groups meet during your child’s Faith Formation sessions. All parents/guardians are encouraged to participate. We never “graduate” from the need to keep our faith mature and appropriate to our age. Be a model for your children that faith growth is a lifelong process.

Take time to visit the session while your child(ren) is also in session:

Sunday 9:15-10:15 am, Vance Hall

Special Needs

In their “1978 Pastoral Statement on Persons with Disabilities,” the United States Catholic Bishops state that “catechesis for individuals with disabilities should be integrated with the normal catechetical programs of the parish.”

Therefore, children who have disabilities are encouraged to participate as much as possible in the regular classroom setting, the liturgical setting and social settings.

For information on sacraments for children with special needs, contact Juan Serros, Director of Faith Formation, at 210-696-0896, ext. 206.

Faith Formation For Children Under Joint Custody

We work with families whose children split time with separated parents. Don’t allow this challenge to prevent you from enrolling them for faith formation at St. Brigid.

Vacation Bible School (June)

Each June St. Brigid parishioners come together to provide a VBS program for the children in our community. This week long event is open to all parish families and guests. Registration starts at the end of the regular Faith Formation year, in late April or early May.
